A Date!

Viktor Scamander and I went on a double date last night! We went with some friends to see a talented group of wizards put on a play called, "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change." We were served dinner during the breaks between acts, and some delicious white chocolate cheesecake was delivered to us during intermission. It was fun, but it was a late night by the time we returned to Hogwarts. I was practically floating on air (without the use of any spells!) because Viktor put his arm around me during the play! But now that the date is over, I really need to tend to my homework and finish that essay on Fleur Delacour Weasley.

Sick, again??

I just got over that horrible cold I had last week and yesterday I started getting another tickle in my throat. This morning I woke up coughing with some congestion as well. What is going on? I've never gotten sick twice in a row before!

After "finishing" my Back to School U-Neck Vest, I have to go back and undo the bind off. They really mean it when they say "bind off loosely". The darn thing wouldn't fit over my head. I should've just put it down for the night, because by that time I was so frustrated and I did not do a careful job undoing the bind off, so now I have to go back a few rows and redo them.

Another assignment!

As the term is nearing its end (I can't believe it's even close to nearing its end yet, but sadly, it is!) the assignments are still coming strong. Just after I turned in my Ravenclaw House Quiz, there was an announcement from the Headmistress assigning a report on Fleur Delacour Weasley. I'll get to work on that right away and turn it in as soon as possible. I'm also still working on my sock kit for my spoilee. There are a few more things I'd like to make before sending it off, and a couple little goodies I'd like to buy. People are beginning to send and receive their owls already and it's making me antsy!

Back to school

Well, Madam Pomfrey wrote me an excuse note to spend the day yesterday in the Ravenclaw Common Room rather than walking around from class to class since my body was achy from the Muggle Marathon. Most of the aches and pains have subsided, but I fear I may have a slight stress fracture in my left foot. Either way, it's back to classes as usual today. I'll probably take and ice pack and put my foot on it while I'm sitting in class. It gives more discomfort than pain, and is probably just one of those things you have to wait out and let heal on its own... but if it's not feeling better in the next day or so, I'll head back to Madam Pomfrey to have it checked. I just want to give my body some time before I go running to the hospital wing over every little thing... I just ran 26.44 miles (the course is a little long) and I'm bound to be in some pain!

The Muggle Marathon

Thanks for all of the support and well-wishes! I love that the students of Hogwarts are so supportive of one another!
The Muggle Marathon was alright. I ran slower than I did on the same course last year, but I felt much better than I did last year. Last year, things started to go sour around the 9th mile. This year, I did a good job holding out until the 16th mile! While I would've loved to improve my time, my main goal was to feel better about the run, and I did accomplish that. The course is very hilly and quite challenging.
It was fun to see and hear so many Muggles out cheering and sharing water, oranges, and other treats to help us all through the run. There were loads of runners there, and I think it would be safe to bet that some were Wizards... it seemed that quite a few of the runners had no idea what typical Muggle running clothes look like. I saw someone in a squirrel costume, a tiger mask, dressed up as a bear that young Muggles like called Winnie the Pooh, and someone dressed in a super-heroes costume complete with large red plastic wings.
I picked up an ice pack from Madam Pomfrey, and I might end up spending the day in the hospital wing rather than walking to and from classes tomorrow.

Not quite as fast as flying...

Since my family lives so closely with Muggles, I've gotten involved with a few Muggle sports and activities. One of these is running. Sure, I've run to class, and I would certainly run if I saw something strange near the Forbidden Forest, but usually when Wizards need to get somewhere fast, they fly, or Apparate, or travel by Floo Powder or Portkey. Some Muggles love to run places. I guess if you've never felt the breeze on your face as you fly on a broomstick, the feeling you get while running outdoors might be enough. Tomorrow I'm going to leave Hogwarts for a few hours (I've got a permission slip from the Headmistress) and do a Muggle run called a marathon. I will write an update when I return to Hogwarts.

They've done it again!

The Gryffindor Seekers are just out of this world! A Gryffindor found the Snitch again this go round! Oh well, Quidditch always seems to bring us Ravenclaws closer together and our team spirit and friendship are a pretty decent replacement for the Snitch! We're holding steady at 2nd place...and who knows what will happen before the end of the 3rd Quidditch match?

Get that Snitch!
I don't think I'll be much help in finding the Snitch this time around (I don't know that I'd say I was "much help" finding it last round...but I did try!). It's just hard to set aside time to search on a school day. Lots of classes and homework that I just can't neglect. Also, with all of my classes and work, I can barely keep track of what time the Snitch will be released. The Headmistress is trying to accommodate all of us as much as she possibly can... but I feel almost like I've been put under a Confundus charm after seeing all these different times floating around... I think the Snitch is about to be released soon... or maybe it already has been. Or maybe it's not even the right day! Oh dear... I need a nice mug of hot butterbeer to soothe my nerves!

Quidditch!

It's time! The questions are posted, and some last minute Snitch business is being taken care of before its release. I have taken a quick look at the questions, but don't even have a minute right now to sit and answer them. It is on my to-do list, right at the very top! We all have to remember to finish this part of the Quidditch tournament before the Snitch is released!

Quidditch is coming!

Almost time for our 2nd round of Quidditch, I can hardly believe it! It would be so fantastic if a Ravenclaw were the one to find the Snitch this time! I read in the latest issue of The Raven's Nest that our house had 100% participation this past week! What an improvement! I hope we all manage to answer the Quidditch trivia questions before the Snitch is released. I'll answer the questions, but unfortunately, I may not be around during the Snitch release. After being so sick last week, I have some work that I need to make up and some of my professors are making me do so right in the middle of Quidditch! Unbelievable! I thought that students and professors alike appreciated a great game of Quidditch!

Sleep, sleep, sleep!

My body must know it needs rest in order to fully get over this cold I've been battling. I slept right through the time I normally set aside to write in my journal yesterday! I also took a 3 hour nap yesterday. I still have symptoms characteristic of the last days of a cold, and I'm getting rather impatient for the whole thing to just run its course and be done with me!
I spent some time yesterday knitting. I was stuck on part of the pattern instructions "RL1" and "LL1" for a while, but I decided to just go with a regular lifted increase the best I knew how and not worry about if it's right-lifted or left-lifted. Hope that doesn't effect my final project too much!
Today I should work on some goodies for my secret pal here at Hogwarts.

Valentines

Valentine's Day has been great... it's not as festive around here as it is during Halloween, but still we students enjoy a chance to celebrate! I received a box of chocolates which I was nervous about (thought it could've been Cockroach Clusters) but it turned out to be some delicious chocolates with Macadamia nuts. Many of us passed out little Valentine cards to one another. My old great-aunt sent her old owl here with a Valentine for me as well. Funny how even that old owl made it here before Marty, who was supposed to be back with a Valentine from Mum. He probably decided to enjoy an extra night in our warm and toasty cottage rather than flying back straight away just to sleep in the drafty owlery. I hope he'll be here soon! My mum always makes up the most magical cards!

Desperately needing magic!

So not only am I sick to my throat, head, nose, etc. but now I am sick to my stomach, too. I accidentally put one of my nice wool sweaters (not handmade, it's from a Muggle shop called Express) in the washing machine. It's now big enough to fit a house elf! It was one of my favorites and I'm so mad at myself! Darn this cold for hindering my ability to think clearly!

Valentine's Day and other special days

Valentine's Day is just around the corner! I've been thinking about what to write on Viktor Scamander's card. I don't want it to be just another Valentine's message, but I also don't want to seem too serious and frighten him. Perhaps on the next Hogsmeade weekend we can have a belated Valentine's tea at Madam Puddifoot's.

Using the bit of Muggle magic called Google Reader has made it so easy for me to keep up with all of my classmates. Unfortunately, it means I don't go to the bulletin boards as often as I used to, and that's where the birthdays are posted. So, I've missed the birthdays of 2 classmates...again! Happy birthdays to Helga Lovegoods and Olive Bloomfleet.

I can't believe that our next round of Quidditch begins in just a few days as well! Feb. 18! I hope I'll be over this horrible cold by then.

We also have a House Quiz that was just posted recently. I'm going to work on that a little later... I promise I'll get it in on time, I just don't even feel like doing homework when I'm feeling this sick!

Visitors!

I just received an owl with a note saying that my aunt & uncle will be apparating into Hogsmeade in between legs of a business trip. In the note, Mum explained that she had already spoken to the Headmistress about giving me special permission to visit Hogsmeade on a weekday so that I can have dinner with my aunt and uncle before they return home. The Headmistress agreed, as long as a professor accompanies me until I meet up with them at the Three Broomsticks. I wonder which professor it will be... can you imagine how giddy--or maybe jealous--the other girls will be if it's Professor Black?!? I'm so excited to see some family!

It was bound to happen sooner or later...

Living in such close quarters with so many other people has finally taken its toll on me. I woke up this morning with a sore throat and cough. I have some aches and pains in my chest and back. The onset of a cold. I am trying to keep it at bay by drinking plenty of Vitamin C. I hope that will work. I don't want to end up in the hospital wing. And I certainly didn't want to let that stop me from visiting Hogsmeade! I've been eating some of the chocolate I bought at Honeydukes and that's making me feel better. I know that's typically the antidote for an encounter with a Dementor, but it really did make me feel as if some of my cold symptoms were temporarily relieved! Maybe the Great Hall will be serving some sort of soup for dinner. That's what always makes me feel better, some of Mum's homemade chicken soup: lots of carrots, lots of noodles, and lots of love!

Hogsmeade!

Visiting Hogsmeade was divine! I'm so glad I did not have to wait two whole years to go there. It was fascinating, being the only all-wizard community around. I didn't go near the Shrieking Shack (I'm not much of a risk-taker) or the Hog's Head, but I made the most of the places I did go!
Honeydukes was my first stop. I steered clear of the Canary Creams (and I hope the other students did as well!) and bought up plenty of Chocoballs. I also picked up a few each of Chocolate Frogs & Peppermint Toads. And, I couldn't resist the Fizzing Whizzbees. I hope I get another owl from grandma before the next trip to Hogsmeade because I spent just about all of my money already!
During a quick stop at Zonko's, I bought some self-shuffling playing cards (leave it to me to find practically the only item that can't cause much trouble!) and then I headed over to the Three Broomsticks where some of the other Ravenclaw girls and I drank butterbeer until I thought we'd burst!

We stayed at the Three Broomsticks until it was time to head back to Hogwarts.

All About Olive- pt. 2

To pass the remaining time before our first Hogsmeade visit, I thought I'd make another list of things about me. I've not quite come up with 100 yet, but here are 10 knitting-related things about me:

1. I taught myself to knit using Debbie Stoller's Stitch n' Bitch handbook. It was my first knitting-related gift and has come in so handy. I wish it had more information (or that I had another book with more information) about finishing or erm...fixing mistakes!
2. I bought a ball of bulky red yarn in Italy and made a scarf. A friend bought me 3 more balls of the same yarn for my birthday and I took apart the scarf, made a hat, took apart the hat, made a poncho, took apart the poncho, made a sweater, took apart the sweater, made another sweater (found part of the first sweater), took apart that sweater and made another hat, which has so far remained in tact. I still have lots of extra yarn.
3. I haven't tried the KnitPicks Harmony needles, but I've been very happy with my Options, so I'd love to give Harmony a chance too. As (bad) luck would have it, right after I ordered fixed 32" cables in small sock sizes, KP introduced cables in 40" and 47" (?) lengths!
4. Although it's not very big, my yarn stash includes yarn bought by me or for me in Italy, Japan, and Peru.
5. To finish a baby blanket in time for a gift, I knitted every possible minute, including on the playground during recess!
6. I suffer from a severe case of Second Sock Syndrome. For this reason, I am attempting to advance my Magic Loop skills. Unfortunately, I'm having much trouble managing anything but toe-up on Magic Loop.
7. After visiting Rome for the first time and seeing an awful lot of chilly-looking homeless people, I knitted a few scarves to give out on my next visit.
8. When I'm on break from Hogwarts, I teach some of my Muggle friends (who range from 3rd grade to 6th grade) how to knit once a week.
9. I am not a monogamous knitter...I always have at least a few things on the needles (some of which are lost causes as I can't remember what pattern/where I stopped/etc.)
10. I only have one little yarn needle, it's plastic and light blue, and gets lost at least three times a month (it's whereabouts are currently unknown).

Tres Bien!

I just spent some time studying some French lessons. I know French is not one of the courses available at Hogwarts right now, but I'm trying to keep up with it anyway. I've spoken French for a long time now, I mostly learned so I could keep in touch with my cousins Jean-Luc et Genevieve, who are now students at Beauxbatons. I do love speaking French, even though it's hard to do so when there's nobody around to speak it with you. A bientot!

All About Olive- pt. 1

I was visiting with Victoria Black earlier and saw her list of 100 things about her. That inspired me to share a bit about myself, but I don't know how long it would take for me to think of 100 things to share! So I'm going to start small and just share a few Potter-related things about me:

1. My dad actually started reading the HP series before I did. He wouldn't stop talking about it, and lent me his copy as soon as he finished so we could discuss.
2. I read most of Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets in London.
3. I bought a copy of Harry Potter & the Sorcerer's Stone in Greece as a souvenir for my dad. He never read it...since it was in Greek!
4. I saw Harry Potter in the (waxy) flesh in a window at Potter's Wax Museum in St. Augustine FL this summer. Dobby was there too!
5. I used to live very close to a Jelly Belly Jelly Bean Factory, where I bought my first bag of Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans.
6. Although I proudly call myself a Ravenclaw, the Sorting Hat debated putting me in Hufflepuff.
7. I received all of the Harry Potter movies 1-5 as a gift on my last birthday.
8. The neatest souvenir I bought during a trip to Prague, Czech Republic was a Harry Potter puppet.
9. My favorite magical animal has always been a unicorn, and I was disappointed to learn that the wand that chose me does not have a unicorn hair core.
10. While I was reading the 2nd book during a trip to London, I had the pleasure of seeing Dame Maggie Smith perform live in "The Lady in the Van".

Where does the time go?

I can't believe I missed both of this week's Ravenclaw Knitting Club meetings! Although the week hasn't actually seemed to go by fast, somehow I just didn't realize it was time for the group to get together. So, I've done a lot of solo-knitting this week. And some solo pants-hemming. I know it would be much easier (not to mention faster!) to do that sort of thing with my wand, but Mum and my grandmother think I should learn the non-magic way of doing things as well. I have a feeling I won't forget what day it is when it's time to leave for Hogsmeade though!

Oh boy!

Our dear, sweet, wonderfully fantastic Headmistress shared some super news with us in the last edition of the Daily Prophet... We get to go to Hogsmeade! This weekend! Even 1st and 2nd years! Oh, I just cannot wait! Where should I go first? Honeydukes! Zonko's! Or maybe The Three Broomsticks? I don't need any new robes or anything, but I'd still love to take a look at Gladrags!
This is all I got to see last time I was in Hogsmeade, just the train platform as we were led off to the boats for Hogwarts.

I'm so excited to really get to go into the town and explore all the shops!

Quiet times

Other than the Headmistress leading us all in the school song, Hogwarts seems very quiet this week. I already mentioned Madam Pomfrey's absence; Hagrid has been filling in for her, but word is, she's almost ready to return to Hogwarts. Meanwhile, our Head Girl has some time off from her duties, which means no issue of the Raven's Nest this week. Can't wait until she's back in action--I do love reading our newsletter! Even those Gryffindor girls who tend to get into trouble sneaking about the castle at night haven't been as active this week (maybe they're still too busy laughing about the night they caught Professor Black dancing around in his underwear!) The lapse in action has given me some extra time for my studies and my knitting, but I do look forward to sharing more fun with my classmates soon!

The grass is always greener

Even though I'm very thankful for the extra crafting time due to the week off from Ravenclaw house homework, I must admit that seeing the Gryffindor work for this week made me wish I had some house homework of my own! I went ahead and did the Gryffindor homework, and then I saw that another student shared another word puzzle! When I finished, I got back to work on my two knitting projects!

School Spirit

Our Headmistress led us in our school song today to restore our school spirit.
The words, in case you've forgotten:

Whether we be old and bald or young with scabby knees,

Although dead flies, rotting brains, and scabs are not the usual stuff of beautiful music, somehow this song always manages to inspire and unite us! I'm so happy to be at Hogwarts!

A break

Our Prefect gave us a week off from the House Quiz assignment! I really do look forward to our House homework, but it will be nice to have a few extra minutes to myself this week. I can get some knitting done in lieu of the House Quiz. Too bad our other professors aren't following suit...if I didn't have to do homework for all of my other classes, I might actually get to finish a project this week!

Class is in session!

Miss Finch-Fletchley's Enchanted Kit Planning class resumed today with a light discussion of stitch markers. A lot of my classmates in the course are making their own stitch markers so Miss F-F included a few tutorials about how to make your own. An owl has already delivered the stitch markers I bought for my secret Gryffindor, and they are so pretty! I hope she will love them. I am making some other little goodies for the package though, so decided I'd busy myself with that rather than attempting the stitch markers as well. Straightening up

I had to do some summoning charms in the dormitory today so my dorm-mates wouldn't get too fed up with my mess. I've been a bit lazy the past week and have taken to leaving my robes on the floor rather than hanging them in the wardrobe or sending them to the laundry. Summoning charms do make these chores so much easier! And they make sharing a room with me so much easier too!

First, the whoops: In all the excitement of Quidditch and Snitch-seeking, I missed one of my own dear housemates' birthdays! Celestina Cadogan, happy birthday to you!

And now the woohoo: Ravenclaw managed to move out of last place! What a wonderful sight to see upon walking into the Great Hall. Even though we didn't find the Snitch, and even though we sadly didn't have 100% participation this go-round, we ended up in 2nd place! While I'm looking forward to another chance for Ravenclaw to move up the ranks, I'm also very much looking forward to the next two weeks until the next Quidditch match, hoping our dear Hogwarts can get back to "normal" for a little while.

Passing time

I just can't wait for the release of the Golden Snitch! I have decided to pass some of the time until then watching an old Muggle movie, Gone With the Wind and doing some knitting. When I told Viktor Scamander of my plans he thought I must be very bored to want to watch this particular movie, but I disagree. I do enjoy old Muggle movies from time to time, and that Miss Scarlett is a real spitfire! I might also spend some time working on some little goodies for my swap package. One of those 3 owls I mentioned yesterday had some supplies for a little treat I have planned for my partner, who happens to be a Gryffindor...I just realized I may not have mentioned that before.

More Owls!

There has been a flurry of owls around here lately! Yesterday my grandmother's old owl arrived with a little note and some spending sickles. I also got a late birthday greeting from a Muggle friend. Of course it's late, she had to first send it to my parents' house and then they had to owl it to me. Muggles don't have their own owls for sending letters and parcels. Three mysterious owls also came with notes saying that they'll each be back with a parcel of some sort. I wonder what is in them. One could be a little gift I sent away for for Viktor Scamander, but I'm not sure about the other two. Can't wait until those owls return so I can find out!

Excitement in Ravenclaw Tower

Not only are we all (all houses!) revved up for Quidditch, but Ravenclaw has had even more celebrating to do as our housemate, Allitrya Spelling, celebrated her birthday.
